# Updating and uninstalling

> How a plugin update differs from re-running the Reason installer, what survives, and how to remove the ports and surfaces.

Source: https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/updating/
Applies to: Reason Remote 1.4.0, Reason Remote Lite 1.3.0

Two things update, and they update differently.

| | How it updates | Do you re-run setup? |
|---|---|---|
| Stream Deck plugin | The Stream Deck app, from the Elgato Marketplace | No |
| Reason codec and maps | The [installer](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/getting-started/#2-run-the-installer) | Yes, then quit and restart Reason |

A plugin you installed by double-clicking a `.streamDeckPlugin` file does **not** get Marketplace updates. New versions arrive as a new file.

## When the codec changed

[1.4.0 and Lite 1.3.0](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/changelog/) need a new codec. So does any release note that says the codec changed. Close Reason, run:

```powershell
irm https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Automate-Pros/reason-remote-setup/main/install.ps1 | iex
```

Then quit Reason completely and start it again. Reason only reads Remote maps at startup. Your loopMIDI ports and the two surfaces stay as they are. The installer does not lock Master for you. A song that was already locked stays locked. A new song does not, unless you set a [default song](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/getting-started/#4-lock-the-master-surface).

One older codec change still matters if you set up before 24 August 2026. The surface gained note output for the Piano. **Delete and re-add** Stream Deck+ Remote in Reason's preferences, and leave **Master Keyboard** ticked. Re-adding is not optional. Reason reads that capability when you add the surface.

## What survives an update

- **Combinator layouts**, in `%APPDATA%\Automate Pros\Reason Remote\layouts\`. They are not inside the plugin. See [the layout file](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/combinator-layout-file/#sharing-and-updates).
- loopMIDI ports, including Autostart.
- The two surfaces in Reason's preferences, except the delete-and-re-add case above.
- Edits you made inside a bundled profile **can be overwritten** when a plugin update replaces its profiles. Export the profile from the Stream Deck app's profile settings before a big edit. See [the rules](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/customize/#the-rules).

## Moving from Lite to the full version

That is an uninstall of one plugin and an install of the other, not a codec update. Do not run both. Steps and the export warning are in [Lite vs full](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/lite-vs-full/#upgrading-to-the-full-version).

## Uninstalling

1. In the Stream Deck app, right-click the plugin and choose **Uninstall**. Its profiles go with it. Layout files in `%APPDATA%\Automate Pros\Reason Remote\` do not. Delete that folder yourself if you want them gone.
2. Delete the `Automate Pros` folders from `Codecs\Lua Codecs\` and `Maps\` in both `%PROGRAMDATA%\Propellerhead Software\Remote\` and `%APPDATA%\Propellerhead Software\Remote\`.
3. Remove both Automate Pros surfaces in Reason's **Preferences → Control Surfaces**.
4. Delete `loopMIDI Port 1` to `loopMIDI Port 4` if nothing else uses them, and quit loopMIDI if you installed it only for this.

Only stepping from Lite to the full version? Do step 1 only.

An install from before the surfaces were called Automate Pros may also have left `Community` codec folders. Re-running the installer deletes those. If both names still appear in Reason, restart Reason after that run.
