# Getting around

> How the deck moves between instrument pages, the Document page, the Master mixer and the Piano, and the one gesture that brings you back.

Applies to: Reason Remote 1.4.0, Reason Remote Lite 1.3.0

There are four places on the deck. Most movement between them happens by itself, and the rest is one key or one gesture away.

| Place | What's there |
|---|---|
| **Instrument pages** | The controls for the device you selected in Reason. Each instrument has a landing page and section pages. |
| **Document** | Transport, tempo, loop, undo and track navigation. It works on the song, not one device. |
| **Master** | Reason's main mixer: sixteen channel faders with meters. |
| **Piano** | Play the selected track from the keys and the strip. |

## The map

*Navigation map. Selecting a device in Reason opens its instrument page. Holding the touch strip on an instrument page opens Document; Back, Go or holding the strip returns to the instrument. From Document, Mix opens Master and Piano opens the Piano; Back on Master returns to Document. Holding the strip on Master or Piano returns straight to the instrument. Holding the Piano's mode key returns to Document.*

Orange arrows are the **hold gesture**: touch and hold anywhere on the touch strip. Grey arrows are keys.

## Hubs, folders and Lite

You rarely open a hub yourself. Auto-follow skips it and lands on the instrument. The hub is what you see when the selection isn't a covered device, and it's where **Back** on a landing page goes.

- The full version has one hub per profile, plus the Combinator's own profile. The Core hub is SubTractor, Friktion, Thor, Fury and **Document**. The other hubs match the packs in the [instrument table](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/instrument-pages/#covered-instruments).
- Lite's hub is two pages: Europa, Kong, ID8, Monotone, SubTractor, Redrum and **Document** on the first, Radical Keys and the Combinator on the second. See [Lite vs full](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/lite-vs-full/#what-lite-covers).
- A **folder** key, drawn with a small grid, groups sections that don't fit on the landing row. **Back** inside a folder moves up one level. [Instrument pages](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/instrument-pages/#folders) shows SubTractor's.
- A **switch** key toggles a setting and lights when it is on. Europa's wave page is the example in [Instrument pages](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/instrument-pages/#switch-keys).
- **Groups** is a Document key, not an instrument folder. It opens Document's section pages. See [the Document page](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/document/#section-pages).

There isn't a separate favorites row in the shipped pages.

## Auto-follow

Select a device in Reason's rack and the deck opens that instrument's **landing page**. Reason Remote sends you there directly, whichever profile the instrument lives in.

- **Nothing selected**, or a device Reason Remote doesn't cover yet: the deck shows a **hub**, a page of instrument keys plus **Document**.
- **Lite:** selecting a device that only the full version covers opens a page that names it and shows what the full version adds. It's not a fault. See [Lite vs full](https://www.reasonremote.com/guide/lite-vs-full/).

### When auto-follow waits

Auto-follow pauses while you're on **Document**, **Master** or the **Piano**, so selecting a track doesn't pull the page out from under your hands. It still keeps track of what you select:

- The **Go** key on the Document page shows the device you selected most recently.
- When you leave, you land on **that** device, not the one you started from.

This is how you pick a track with **Prev** and **Next**, or choose one in Reason while playing the piano, and then go straight to its controls.

## The hold gesture

**Touch and hold anywhere on the touch strip.** It switches between two places:

| You're on | Holding the strip takes you to |
|---|---|
| An instrument page | **Document**, or the **Piano** if that's where you went last |
| Document (any Document page) | The instrument you selected most recently |
| Master | The instrument, directly, without going through Document |
| Piano | The instrument |

You choose the second place by where you go:

- Press **Piano** and the hold switches between **instrument and Piano**. That means you can go back and forth between tweaking a sound and playing it.
- Press **Document** on a hub, or hold the Piano's mode key, and the hold switches between **instrument and Document** again.

The hold itself never changes the target, so going back and forth can't send you somewhere unexpected.

> **Tip:** Lost? Hold the strip. From Document, Master or the Piano, one hold brings you back to your instrument. Or click the device in Reason's rack and auto-follow takes you there.

## Back keys

**Back** is always the top-left key, and it always moves you **one level up**:

| Where | Back goes to |
|---|---|
| Instrument section page | The instrument's landing page |
| Page inside a folder | The folder's first page, or the landing page |
| Instrument landing page | The hub for that instrument's profile |
| Document landing page | Your instrument (same as **Go**) |
| Document section page | The Document landing page |
| Meters or Link page | The Transport section |
| Master | The Document landing page |

The Piano has no Back key, because all eight keys are notes. Leave with the hold gesture, or hold the mode key for 0.7 seconds to go to the Document landing page.

## Getting to each place

| From | To | How |
|---|---|---|
| Anywhere | An instrument | Select it in Reason |
| Instrument page | Document | Hold the strip (or **Document** on the hub) |
| Document | Instrument | **Back**, **Go**, or hold the strip |
| Document | Master | **Mix** |
| Master | Document | **Back** |
| Master | Instrument | Hold the strip |
| Document | Piano | **Piano**, or tap **Piano** on dial 4's strip |
| Piano | Instrument | Hold the strip |
| Piano | Document | Hold the mode key (bottom-right) |
| Instrument | Piano | Hold the strip, after you've visited the Piano once |
| Document | Previous or next track | **Prev** and **Next** |
